Benefits of Working Remotely

Why do people prefer working remotely?

Remote work allows employees an unparalleled level of independence and the ability to better manage the age-old work-life balance. With many remote work jobs, workers don’t have to be at their computer from 9am-5pm Monday through Friday. As long as they get their work done, they are free to manage their time as they see fit. This allows for flexibility for all kinds of situations—for example, working parents who need to be home by a certain time to get their children off the school bus, people with physical disabilities who may not be able to easily work in a traditional office environment, and those who live in rural areas where there aren’t many jobs. With the power of a computer and the internet, remote work is widely available.

However, working remotely can have its challenges. For example, maybe you are a single parent with children at home. Or maybe you live in a rural area with an unreliable internet connection. Or maybe you have a boss who doesn't respect your work-life boundaries and is constantly calling and emailing you, even after hours. This course is designed to help you navigate these challenges.

Remote work also allows for tremendous opportunities to pursue entrepreneurship on your own (also referred to as “solo-preneurship”). When you work at home, you quickly realize how easy it is to connect with people around the U.S. and the entire world. If you have a skillset that clients desire, you can use the internet to reach and work with them—even if you never end up meeting in person. You can market your services and reach people that you otherwise would never encounter by freelancing and building a roster of customers or clients. This allows remote workers with an entrepreneurial flair to branch out beyond working for an employer and take charge of their own career in an exciting way. The most important thing a professional can invest in is himself or herself. Rather than thinking “What is my salary going to be?” an entrepreneurial mind thinks “What is my value to the company?” and “Can I make more money by marketing my skills on my own?”

Another advantage of remote work is that more and more positions are being opened up for people with a certain set of skills—not a certain degree. Companies like Google and Tesla have announced in recent years that they are more interested in what skills and experience a job candidate brings to the table. Simply having a college degree no longer gives you a leg up in many instances. Being able to learn and work remotely has leveled the playing field, enabling those who previously couldn’t access educational and professional materials the opportunity to learn and work from the comfort of their own home.
