The Growth of Remote Work

Although many people who work at home only began doing so this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are others who have been working remotely for years. Remote work isn't going anywhere, and its prominence in all industries will continue to grow. Remote workers report higher satisfaction with work-life balance, and employers enjoy the lower overhead costs with fewer employees in the office.

In fact, remote workers save an average of $4,000 per year in expenses, all due to working from home. And companies save an average of $22,000 annually for every employee who works from home because unused office space quickly becomes a costly liability. Clearly, there is a massive financial advantage for both employees and employers in the shift to remote work.

Global Remote Working Stats

  • Globally, 58% of remote workers felt that their productivity was the same or better than before COVID-19. A total of 64% of them attributed this to less time spent commuting, followed by 55% who were able to focus better, according to Bain & Company.
  • Over the past ten years, 83 percent of U.S. businesses have adopted work from home policies or are planning to adopt one.
  • A Zapier study in 2019 discovered that Millennials were 39% more productive working from home compared to 52% more productivity of the Baby Boomers.
  • Research has shown that remote workers take fewer breaks than when they were office-based workers (CoSo Could 2015).
  • 26% of those working from home earn over $100,000 annually, as opposed to just 8% comparable office-based. Remote workers are three times as likely to earn over $100,000 annually compared to office-based employees. (OWLLabs 2019)
  • Considering how much you save by working from home, it is not surprising that 34% of all the employees interviewed would accept a 5% pay cut if allowed to work from home. (OWLLabs 2019)
